This high-energy, masterclass style workshop is designed to get you in the best shape you can be for your upcoming school or Summer Stock auditions. We will cover every aspect of the audition from a clear and effective slate, how to best mark your cut and communicate music needs to the accompanist, choosing the right cuts, monologue and scene coaching, best vocal practices, and dance call skills. Students will receive individual coaching and feedback from the group on their song cuts; be prepared to answer questions about tactics, intent, motivation, and given circumstances for their songs and monologues; and master an understanding of foundational ballet technique as well as an audition style dance combo. Please come prepared with sheet music to work from and a monologue (while memorization isn’t necessary, it will be easier to work if it is at least moderately memorized). Students should dress comfortably and be ready to work/move.
Camp Learning Objectives/Goals
- Work on perfecting your audition, from song choice, communicating your tempo, the effective slate, monologue selection, and more.
- Learn the proper etiquette and preparation for a dance call.
- Receive monologue and song coaching from trained professionals, leaving the weekend with an audition to use for college and beyond.

Prerequisites:
This auditions workshop is designed for students with some acting or singing experience. Students who want to perfect their auditions at the collegiate or professional level should consider this course.
Brandon LaReau is a PhD student in Performance Studies at the University of Georgia. He holds an MFA in Theatre Pedagogy from VCU and a BA in Musical Theatre from CNU. Brandon received statewide recognition in Virginia for his performance as The Boatswain in Guilbert and Sullivan’s HMS Pinafore, and was an Irene Ryan Award nominee for his performance as Mary Sunshine in Chicago. He won the 2019 Richmond Theatre Critic’s Circle award for Best Supporting Actor for his turn as the Lion in Virginia Repertory Theatre’s production of The Wiz. Other past roles include Audrey II (Little Shop of Horrors), Mic Hamilton (Steel Pier), Captain Hook (Peter Pan), Roger de Bris (The Producers), Papa Ge (Once On This Island), and Lumiere (Beauty and the Beast). Opera roles include Seneca in L’Incoronazione di Poppea, and Escamillo (Carmen) and Pooh-Bah (The Mikado) in recital. This is Brandon’s first year as a Georgia Center Youth Programs instructor.
Accompanist:
Connor Austell received his education at the University of Michigan and at Grand Valley State University under the tutelage of Arthur Greene, Sookkyung Cho, and Giuseppe Lupis. He studied chamber music with Katherine Collier, Helen Marlais, and Pablo Mahave-Veglia, and has participated in masterclasses with world-class artists such as Jonathan Biss and Martin Katz. Currently, Connor is completing his Doctor of Musical Arts degree in piano performance as a student of David Fung at the University of Georgia, Athens, where he also teaches music theory courses. This is Connor’s first year as a Georgia Center Youth Programs accompanist.
