This course equips participants to serve as professional medical interpreters and prepares them with the theoretic, linguistic, and procedural backgrounds necessary to comply with the Medical Interpreting Standards of Practice. Topics covered include:
- Ethics of Interpreting
- Healthcare interpreting terminology in English and Korean
- Basic understanding of human body system
- Common diseases and medical procedures
- Korean/English linguistics skills
- Analysis of the healthcare provider environment and issues regarding Korean healthcare
- Development of integrated interpreter skills and technique
- Understanding the cultural aspects of Korean healthcare in the United States
Interested in National Certification: Currently, the professional standards for Medical Interpreters recommend that Medical Interpreters have a minimum of 40-hours of educational training (which our course meets). If you are interested in becoming a Nationally Certified Medical Interpreter, please visit The National Board of Certification for Medical Interpreters or the Certification Commission for Healthcare Interpreters.
Who Should Attend?
This course is designed for adults and will include medically explicit discussion of topics that are of an adult nature, including but not limited to body parts and bodily functions, sexually transmitted diseases, etc. The class is open to students 18 years of age and up.

Hyun Rutledge was born in South Korea and studied English at Hankuk University of Foreign Languages in Seoul South Korea. Since coming over to the United States, Ms. Rutledge attended Georgia Institute of Technology and Devry University in Atlanta and held multiple professional jobs before she became a freelance interpreter in 2012. Ms. Rutledge worked as an exclusive Emory Hospital medical interpreter for years, her experience includes working for The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), multiple hospitals, county courts, law offices, and medical practices. In 2017, she joined CNN International where she began working on Korean issues including all the Inter-Korean summits and the Olympics held in South Korea. She continued to work with CNN International for the historic US-Korean summits. Ms. Rutledge is a CMI-Korean designation holder.
She lives in Gwinnett County, and enjoys doing pottery, hiking, rock climbing, cooking, and wineries.
