Studio Photography (Live Workshop) EXCLUSIVE OFFERING!

Focus on portraiture and lighting, as you practice the basics of studio photography for two nights at the Georgia Center, then travel to the instructor's studio, Georgia Snaps Photography in Elberton, GA, for your final session. The prerequisite for this class is Fundamentals of Photography or equivalent experience and instructor's permission. Instructor assumes that you understand about shutter speeds, apertures, lenses, composition, and how to use your flash. Basic camera knowledge will not be taught. Class size limited to 10. Photoshop for Photographers (Live Workshop)

Photoshop for Photographers begins with the basics but then goes into an in-depth look at Photoshop CS4/Photoshop Elements. You will learn the following: the use of adjustment layers and selections; image formatting for emailing and printing or digital scrapbooking; scanning, restoring, and hand-coloring old photographs; cropping images; setting for correct exposure and color; and you'll learn how to calibrate your monitor and printer for best results. Instructor-created video tutorials are available. If you have not purchased your digital camera, contact the instructor first. Class size limited to 14. Prerequisites: Moderate to extensive experience with a computer is an absolute must, as basic computer skills will not be taught. Instructor assumes that you have either taken Fundamentals of Photography or that you know and understand how to use your digital camera, that you understand about shutter speeds/apertures, lenses, composition, and how to use your flash. Basic camera knowledge will not be taught.

Fundamentals of Photography (Classroom)

An in-depth study of film and digital SLR cameras, qualities of light, interchangeable lenses, creative uses of shutter and aperture, composition, electronic flash and portraiture basics. Includes working field trip and photo evaluation. This class is open to anyone. If you do not yet own your SLR camera, you can receive camera selection advice from the instructor at the first session. This class, or equivalent knowledge, is a prerequisite for most electives in the Photography Certificate Program. Class size limited to 18. A $10 supply fee is payable to instructor at first session. Photojournalism (Live Workshop)

Never again feel that you missed the important shot that captures the story. Gain the experience and techniques needed to shoot like a photojournalist and create images that show emotion and meaning. Learn exposure, composition, and timing from a true professional. In this course you will build your own entry-level photojournalism portfolio and take steps to move from a hobby to a career. Video Filming and Editing for Fun and Profit (Live Workshop) NEW!

Photographers: Add to your business by creating short videos for company websites using photographs and video. (Outsourced charges range from $750 $1000 per finished minute.) Businesses: Send a team member to learn how to make your own quality company videos. Parents: Edit hours of soccer games, band practice, and party videos, as well as still photographs, into short unique movies that the entire family will want to watch. Learn to upload and manage videos at sharing sites, and gain tips on selecting video equipment, computer configurations, editing software, selecting and using music, and more. Your instructor, Dr. Rick Waters, began filming and editing video using the computer in 1998 and has won three Videographer Awards. Wedding Photography (Live Workshop)

Wedding photographs tell a story and last a lifetime. Photographs as important as these should be handled with caring hands, a thoughtful eye, and a focus on detail. This course is designed for experienced amateurs as well as those who are interested in becoming professional photographers. Discussion and demonstration will focus on, among many topics, the use of the flash, lighting, and candid vs. posed photos. Also learn how to create wedding and coffee-table albums, where to upload your wedding photos, and about wedding contracts, pricelists, websites, and advertising. Two sessions will meet off-campus at different Wedding Houses, with live models. One session will meet in a computer lab for color correcting and adjusting photographs. Preparing Your Photography for Exhibit (Live Workshop) NEW!

As your photography advances from hobby to career, you will want to create a professional portfolio and to size, mat and frame your work for effective display. This class will get you started; then you will work with others in the group to plan a public exhibit featuring the photography of students in the University of Georgia Center for Continuing Education Photography Certificate Program. Take this course if you are a Certificate student who plans to be in the July 2010 group exhibit, or if you plan to exhibit on your own at some time in the future. Online Courses in Photography |
Try one of our many Online courses in Photography and set your own schedule. Lessons in these 6-week, 12-lesson courses are released each Wednesday and Friday and can be completed any time thereafter until the course ends. Each lesson includes an online discussion area to meet with your instructors and classmates. There are no prerequisites for any of these courses. An optional final exam is included but is required only for students applying courses to the Photography Certificate Program. Monthly start dates. $149.
Students in the Photography Certificate Program may apply a maximum total of 20 hours from one approved online elective course toward the certificate. Contact the Photography Certificate Program Coordinator at 706-542-3537 for approval to apply a specific course toward your Certificate. Photography Certificate Program

Whether you are considering or pursuing a career in photography, or you are interested in improving the skills you use in photographing your own life, family, or hobbies, the Photography Certificate Program is a way to focus your energies and obtain instruction from some of the best photographers in the area. Earn your Photography Certificate from the University of Georgia Center for Continuing Education and obtain recognition for your abilities.
Shape the program to fit your own needs and interests: only the first two courses are required. The remainder of the program consists of electives you choose from our many offerings.
There is no additional fee to register for the Photography Certificate Program. You can take up to three years to complete your courses and prepare your portfolio. (Students who began the program before Fall 2008 may request a one-year extension.)
Requirements:
- Register for Event #69338 Photography Certificate to declare to the Professional & Personal Development Department that you are a Certificate student. (Students who began the program before Fall 2009 may register retroactively.) Online Registration Form
- Take 2 (two) Required Courses
- Fundamentals of Photography and
- Photoshop for Photographers
For highly experienced or professional photographers, it may be possible to exempt these two courses with permission of the instructor; proof of skills will be required.
- Select Elective Courses
- Minimum of 5 (five) elective courses.
- Electives must total a minimum of 75 total contact hours.
- The two Required Courses (above) do not count toward the elective total.
- A maximum of 20 hours of pre-approved online coursework may be counted toward the total.
- Read course descriptions carefully some lower-level courses cannot be applied to the Certificate Program.
- Have a minimum 80% attendance rate in each course you apply toward the Certificate.
- Complete all assigned homework and classwork in all courses.
- Prepare an Exit Portfolio for public viewing (see instructions).
Camera Requirements:
You must have a Single Lens Reflex (SLR) camera (digital or film). NO Point and Shoot cameras may be used.

Note: Any student who has taken Fundamentals of Photography and a Photoshop course designed for Photographers may sign up for any advanced photography course without becoming a Photography Certificate student; however, when lack of space becomes an issue, Certificate students have enrollment preference over non-certificate students. Must be 18+ to attend or have permission of the instructor or program coordinator.
