The Spanish Language Certificate Program
Looking for a way to become more valuable to your employer? Bilingual workers are in high demand. Add a Spanish Language Certificate to your résumé, and watch the doors open! Interested students should call 706-542-3537 or 1-800-811-6640 before enrolling in a Spanish course.

To earn your Spanish Language Certificate, you must:

1. Officially register as a Spanish Language Certificate student.

2. Complete General Spanish, Levels 1-4 within 24 months. General Spanish, Level 1 or 2 may be exempted through the Spanish Language Placement Test.

3. Receive a score of 70% or higher on a Proficiency Test at the end of each course that you take.

4. After completing General Spanish, Level 4, pass an oral examination given by a qualified Georgia Center staff member.

5. After successfully completing steps 1-4, you will be awarded a University of Georgia Center for Continuing Education Spanish Language Certificate

¡Viva! Curriculum
Vista Higher Learning's ¡Viva! Curriculum. a comprehensive set of learning materials, will bring your Spanish language study to life! The curriculum materials can be purchased separately, and one set of books will be used for General Spanish, Levels 1-4. The textbook is not included in the course fee. When you register for any one of Levels 1-4, you must make a one-time purchase of the ¡Viva! Curriculum package, $105. If you would like to purchase a textbook from a bookstore or online, please search for ISBN numbers 1-59334-575-5 or 978-1593345754 to be sure you have the correct edition. If you have any questions about the text, please contact the PPD office at 706-542-3537. If your class is cancelled due to low enrollment, the Georgia Center is not responsible for costs associated with the purchase of textbooks from online or outside retailers.


General Spanish, Level 1 (Classroom)
Emphasis is on oral communication and easy word recognition. Learn common conversational expressions, proper pronunciation, important vocabulary, and present tense verb conjugations. Teachers: To receive PLUs, you must complete and submit this Prior Approval Form before starting your class.

You will translate Spanish from English back to Spanish, perfect your pronunciation, build vocabulary, and participate in conversations. Prerequisite: Completion of General Spanish, Level 2, pass the Spanish Language Placement Test, Level 2, or permission of the instructor. Beginning Spanish Conversation (Classroom)
You've learned the technical parts of the language — now you need to practice speaking it! This class is designed for students who have a basic vocabulary, but need to expand their speaking and listening skills. Lessons will focus on common experiences, such as: greetings and introductions, daily activities, visiting stores and restaurants, conversations about family members, hobbies and work. As always, proper pronunciation is stressed. No textbook required. Prerequisite: General Spanish, Level 2 or equivalent score on Spanish Placement Test.

Intermediate Spanish Conversation (Classroom)
This class is designed to help you increase your listening comprehension, and understand how Spanish language is used in natural conversation. Lessons will focus on more abstract ideas and open-ended discussions, expanding vocabulary, and cultural differences between Spanish and English speakers. We will spend some time using short articles in Spanish as conversation prompts. Proper pronunciation is stressed. No textbook required. Introduction to American Sign Language (ASL) (Classroom, PLU-approved)
You will be introduced to the basic ASL vocabulary, some finger-spelling, and ASL grammar, facial expressions and survival signs. With partners you will practice visual and receptive skill-building, finger-spelling using the manual alphabet, basic signs and numbers, and you will learn the syntax and grammar rules of ASL. The deaf/Deaf cultural differences will also be openly discussed. Open to students 16+.

Course Objectives:
The student will:
 • Demonstrate the use of fingerspelling the manual alphabet
 • Develop a basic vocabulary of signs and numbers
 • Employ the syntax and grammar rules of ASL
 • Acquire a basic knowledge of Deaf culture
 • Recognize the cultural differences signified by the term deaf/Deaf
 • Develop beginning-level expressive and receptive skills in ASL

Instant Italian (Online)
In this class, you will read, hear, and practice dialogues based on typical situations that you're likely to encounter while traveling in Italy. Lessons cover the Italian alphabet, phonetics, pronunciation, proper forms of address, expressions of courtesy, and how to make introductions. By the final lesson, you'll know how to ask for help, ask directions, navigate Italian shops, book a hotel room, order a meal, and much more!

Accent Reduction: Clear Speech for Non-Native English Speakers (Classroom)
This class will help non-native English speakers become more aware of their own speech habits, and how those habits affect their ability to communicate with others. The course will focus on the contrast between the sounds in an individual's native language and English, as well as the rhythm of American speech. Students will learn techniques for self-correction and new ways to improve the clarity of their English.

Advanced Conversational English (Classroom)

Grammar for ESL
This course includes in-depth analysis of English grammar for intermediate to advanced English as Second Language college students. Structure of Standard English is explored in order to prepare the learner for regular mainstream English classes. Topics include a review of all tenses, the use of modals, the adjective clause, the noun clause, the adverb clause, phrases, count and non-count nouns and some English terms. The course is designed to provide students ample opportunities to apply their knowledge to their particular areas of study throughout college and beyond.

Writing for ESL
In this course, you will learn about the entire writing process and its five stages: prewriting, outlining, writing, revising, and editing. You will discover how to write clearly focused topic sentences and thesis statements, which will guide you in writing logical, unified paragraphs and essays. You will also refine and perfect your work, making it free of grammatical and punctuation errors. Along the way, you will also gain important critical thinking skills and learn some techniques for writing concisely--something that is highly valued in English writing. When you finish this course, you will be able to write clearly, logically, and cohesively, and you will be able to apply what you have learned in any academic or work setting.
