Georgia Junior Science & Humanities Symposium logoAt GJSHS, high school students from across the state have the opportunity to present their original research in the sciences, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM) field before a panel of judges and an audience of their peers. Students can compete for military sponsored scholarships and a variety of other awards. Some students will be selected to advance to the National JSHS.

After a preliminary judging process in which qualified STEM professionals review the student submitted abstracts and research papers, approximately 50 students will receive invitations to attend GJSHS either as presenters or symposium observers. Presenters win an expense-paid trip to the symposium and two of these five finalists will have the opportunity to competitively present their research, and the other three will be invited to enter the poster competition.

Approximately six to eight teachers from Georgia are selected to attend GJSHS as chaperones. Application information will be available on this page beginning December 1, 2024.

Students and chaperones who are selected to attend GJSHS are provided with lodging and meals (except for one “on your own” dinner) for the duration of the event. Expenses are funded by a grant provided by the research programs of the U.S. Department of Defense.

Symposium Features:

  • Presentations of original research projects by high school students
  • Guest speakers offer a look beyond high school to career development opportunities
  • Laboratory visits and tours
  • Meet and exchange ideas with STEM professionals and other students with similar interests
