| Course Description
This Forestry Ethics course is designed for professional foresters who want to remain grounded in their ethical obligations to serve the public and be stewards of the land. It provides an introduction to ethics, principles of ethics, and ethics in forestry. It also includes information about different approaches to ethical decision-making and the steps to be taken in ethical decision-making. Online resources include thought-provoking ethics quotes and online links that focus on forestry ethics. This course has been approved by the Society of American Foresters (SAF).
Who Should Attend?
Professional foresters who want to remain grounded in their ethical obligations to serve the public and serve as stewards of the land.
Registered foresters needing forestry continuing education (CFE) credits to continue their forestry registration and maintain their licenses
Professional foresters wishing to attain Category 1 CFEs approved by the Society of American Foresters.
All others with an interest in forestry ethics
Course Prerequisites & What do Successful Graduates Earn?
There are no course pre-requisites. To complete this self-paced, self-study course, you must successfully complete the online assignments and submit a written exercise with a score of 70% or higher. Upon the electronic release of your online course URL, username and password, you will have up to 30 days to complete the required assignments. A written exercise will be graded by the course facilitator, Ben Jackson, Ph.D., and your results will be e-mailed to your preferred address within 30 days.
Foresters will earn a 1 hour Category 1 CFE Certificate from the Society of American Foresters (SAF) and 0.1 University of Georgia Continuing Education Unit (CEU). Non-Foresters will earn 0.1 UGA CEU.

1. Define the term "ethics."
2. Distinguish between the terms "ethics" and "values."
3. Suggest several reasons why the term "ethics" is difficult to define.
4. List and summarize the three categories of ethics principles.
5. Explain why ethics is important in the forestry profession.
6. Describe and summarize the document, "Professional Ethics of the (Georgia) State Board of Registration for Foresters."
7. Distinguish among the five different approaches to ethical decision-making.
8. Select and defend one approach to ethical decision-making during a prescribed ethical dilemma.
9. List and summarize the five steps in ethical decision-making.
