A Conference provided through an educational grant of the U.S. Department of Justice Drug Enforcement Administration and The University of Georgia College of Pharmacy

Most students do not significantly abuse alcohol and drugs. Nonetheless, they are likely to be negatively influenced and suffer from the high-risk behaviors of peers who do. A recent poll indicated that more than 70 percent of UGA undergraduate students consumed alcohol within a 30-day period and over 44 percent engaged in binge drinking at least once during a two-week period. In short, substance abuse threatens the educational, sociological, and economical well-being of a campus and consequently society as a whole.

This one day conference, co-sponsored by the U.S. Department of Justice Drug Enforcement Administration and the University Of Georgia College Of Pharmacy, will examine the neuroscience of the young brain and the impact alcohol, marijuana, methamphetamine, steroids, opiates and other prescription drugs have on the student's ability to learn. It will also outline various prevention and treatment modalities for combating substance abuse in young adults.

By understanding the cognitive implications of substance abuse, detecting risky behaviors, and identifying approaches for prevention, school and college campuses can implement effective strategies to reduce alcohol- or drug-related problems and enhance the educational and social experiences of their students. This conference is intended for educators, social workers, law enforcement, health care providers, and the public.

Learning Objectives

Participants will be able to:

  1. Describe the neurobiological basis of psychoactive chemical use, abuse, addiction, dependence in the young adult brain.

  2. Recognize that although prescription drugs are legal, they are just as dangerous as illicit or "street" drugs.

  3. Discuss the prescription drugs currently being abused at the highest rates in the United States, and abuse data.

  4. Explain the importance of prescription drugs use only under the care of a DEA licensed health care providers.
